Officer Mursal was born in Somalia and grew up in Kenya and Syria. In 2005, he moved to the United States, where he attended high school and college.
While Officer Mursal was in college, he was also working two jobs. During that time, he crossed paths with Commander Eric Vang-Sitcler who mentored him to become a police office, and the rest is history.
Officer Mursal became a parking enforcement officer with the SPPD in 2015 and was hired as a police officer in 2017. In his five years as a sworn officer, he patrolled all three districts and was an academy liaison earlier this year. As a liaison, he mentored newly hired police officers through the sixteen-week academy.
Officer Mursal is also fluent in Somali and Arabic (including six of 12 dialects).
