Minnesota lawmakers have yet to reach a budget agreement three weeks after the legislative session’s May 19 adjournment deadline. Representative Nathan Nelson (R-Mora) expressed concern and disappointment over the delay, stating that he and his Republican colleagues remain prepared to complete their legislative responsibilities.

Nelson noted that Republicans have continued to participate in negotiations, review proposals, and work toward an agreement. He criticized Governor Tim Walz for traveling out of state during ongoing budget talks. According to Nelson, "Unfortunately, while we’ve stayed focused on the task at hand, Governor Tim Walz chose to spend the weekend campaigning out of state in South Carolina. That’s right—while our state waits on a budget deal, the Governor was out on the national stage telling his party to 'be a little meaner' and take a more aggressive stance against President Trump."

Nelson cited Walz’s remarks from South Carolina: “Maybe it's time for us to be a little meaner, a little bit more fierce, because we have to ferociously push back on this.” Nelson added, "Frankly, this kind of rhetoric helps no one—especially not Minnesotans who are waiting on a finished budget, a safer state, and more accountability."

He also referenced comments by Representative Max Rymer (R-North Branch), who wrote on X: “If Walz runs for re-election, his entire 3rd term will instantly be devoted to running for President. Given our spending, fraud, crime problems—how’s that remotely acceptable?”

Nelson concluded by emphasizing the need for leadership focused on Minnesota’s priorities rather than national politics. "This is no time for presidential politics. This is a time to lead—to be present, responsible, and committed to getting a sound budget in place," he said.

He pledged continued engagement with constituents: "Minnesotans are tired of political games. So am I. That’s why I’ll keep showing up and doing the job you elected me to do: bringing common sense to the Capitol, advocating for our region, and working toward solutions that prioritize public safety, economic stability, and responsible government."
