Rep. Betty McCollum, a long-serving member of the U.S. Congress representing Minnesota’s 4th district, has shared her views on recent developments in Syria through a series of tweets. McCollum, who has been in office since 2001 and previously served in the Minnesota House of Representatives, provided her perspective on the future political landscape of Syria following the end of the Assad regime.
In a tweet posted on December 8, 2024, McCollum emphasized the importance of creating a new constitution for Syria. She stated that "The people of Syria and the forces that ended the Assad regime must now quickly put together a roadmap that leads to a new constitution that guarantees and protects the rights and freedoms of all Syrians."
On the same date, she highlighted the significance of this moment for Syrian citizens who have endured decades of hardship. McCollum remarked, "For the Syrian people who have been victimized and tortured for decades, this is a historic opportunity to reclaim their future for peace and regional stability. However, the outcome of this tumultuous situation is far from certain."
In another tweet posted shortly after, McCollum expressed hope for positive outcomes from these changes. She wrote, "Let us hope that this turn of events will bring the opportunity for stability and lasting peace in the Middle East."
