Minnesota Department Of Corrections issued the following announcement on Nov. 05.
This week, the DOC held an appreciation event to recognize the DOC Honor Guard.
Commissioner Paul Schnell, Deputy Commissioner Michelle Smith, and Chief of Staff Safia Khan attended to thank members for their service. Honor Guard members from each facility attended and heard presentations by the Law Enforcement Memorial Association (LEMA)’s President Brian Hubbard (also serves as Chief of the Crystal Police Department) and Commander Dave Holmquist (also serves as Deputy Sherriff in the Kandiyohi County Sheriff’s Office), as well as DOC Peer Support representative Sean Yurick.
The event focused on the wellness of team members and their training—specifically learning more about LEMA’s role in events our Honor Guard is asked to attend. The DOC’s Honor Guard upholds the longstanding traditions of military and public safety ceremonies, and is called upon to memorialize those who leave us in death, to attend dedication ceremonies, and to honor significant milestones and achievements at a variety of community events.
DOC Honor Guard leader and Rush City Captain Nathan Bartz said, “This event improved the cohesiveness between our facility Honor Guard teams and allowed our senior leadership an up close look at our work.”
Sgt. Amy Winkel, Sgt. Chad Gunderson, and Shawn Yurick were also honored for their retirements. Thank you for your service, Amy, Chad, and Sean!
