MINNESOTA DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS: People leaving prison face incredible hurdles reintegrating to society, stabilizing in the community, and transforming their lives

Prison

Minnesota Department Of Corrections issued the following announcement on Aug. 05.

People leaving prison face incredible hurdles reintegrating to society, stabilizing in the community, and transforming their lives. Having a safe place to live is foundational for anyone to begin down that path. Yet, almost 25% of total releases from Minnesota prisons in 2021 were to sheltered and unsheltered homeless addresses.

That’s a huge problem. The Minnesota Legislature recently created reporting requirements for the Minnesota Department of Corrections related to homelessness and homeless releases. Check out a recent story from KSTP that reported on the first round of data the agency reported this year, and examined the issue of homelessness among those released from prison: https://kstp.com/.../mn-dept-of-corrections-report-shows.../

The legislature also required the Minnesota DOC to develop a Homelessness Mitigation Plan for individuals released from prison. The corrections system alone will never solve the problem of homelessness. But we have an obligation to do our part.

And we need your help and want to hear from the public about how we can improve our efforts to tackle this issue and do our part.

The plan is due to the legislature by October 31. Click here to learn more about what we’re doing and take the survey to provide your input: https://engage.doc.mn.gov/role-of-mn-corrections-system...
