St. Paul Public Schools canceled its classes due to the ongoing teacher strikes taking place in St. Paul, Minnesota.

The class cancellation came after the last-minute negotiations failed, and there is no telling when the strikes will end, according to CBS Local Minnesota.

Thirty-seven thousand students have been affected by the strike, which last happened in 1946.

Superintendent Joe Gotham talked about the limited budget that has hampered the negotiations.

“The goal is to have a settlement," Gotham said. "A settlement would send a message to the St. Paul community that our doors are open for education.”

After 45 hours of negotiations between the two sides, there was no resolve, and teachers decided to take to the streets.

“I can assure students, families, staff members and our community that the Board of Education, my team and I did absolutely everything we could to avoid a strike by teachers," Gotham said.

The president of the St. Paul Federation of Educators, Nick Faber, also had something to say.

“We wanted to settle this contract and be in school with our students Tuesday morning," he said. "Unfortunately, after more than nine months and marathon bargaining over the weekend, district leaders weren’t willing to move on the issues educators and parents know will help students thrive and break down racial barriers in our schools."
