Strong schools are considered essential to the vitality of rural communities in Minnesota, according to State Representative Ron Kresha. In a recent column, Kresha emphasized that schools in small towns serve multiple roles beyond education, acting as community centers and major employers.

Kresha pointed out several challenges faced by rural schools, including difficulties in recruiting teachers, maintaining facilities, and expanding course offerings due to limited enrollment and tight budgets. Despite these obstacles, he noted that educators in these areas continue to support students with limited resources.

He called for state policies that ensure rural districts receive equal opportunities compared to larger ones. "That means supporting broadband access, promoting flexible learning options, and ensuring fair funding formulas that reflect the true cost of serving rural students," Kresha stated. He also advocated for stronger connections between education and local career paths through partnerships with businesses and technical colleges.

"When students in rural Minnesota see a future for themselves close to home, communities thrive," Kresha wrote. "Education is the bridge that keeps our small towns strong and our workforce growing. By continuing to invest in rural schools, we invest in the future of Minnesota itself."
