U.S. Representative Betty McCollum, who has represented Minnesota’s 4th district in Congress since 2001, addressed recent political developments and local elections in a series of posts on November 5, 2025.

In her first post of the day, McCollum criticized former President Donald Trump for the ongoing government shutdown, writing, "Today, Donald Trump broke his own record for the longest government shutdown in American history. It’s long past time to bring the House back into session, negotiate with Democrats to re-open the government, and end the health care and hunger crises that Republicans created." (November 5, 2025)

Later that afternoon, she commented on voter sentiment following recent elections: "Americans sent a message last night: They're fed up with a Republican government that's focused more on millionaires, billionaires, and large corporations than they are on the costs of food, rent, health care, and utilities that are making life unaffordable for working people." (November 5, 2025)

McCollum also congratulated Kaohly Her on being elected mayor of Saint Paul and thanked outgoing Mayor Melvin Carter for his service. She posted: "Congratulations to Saint Paul Mayor-elect Kaohly Her on an impressive victory last night! I look forward to working together on behalf of all Saint Paul residents. I thank Mayor Melvin Carter for his many years of public service. He has served Saint Paul honorably and deserves" (November 5, 2025)

McCollum was born in Minneapolis in 1954 and currently resides in Saint Paul. Before her tenure in Congress began in 2001—succeeding Bruce Vento—she served in the Minnesota House of Representatives from 1993 to 2001. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from St. Catherine University.
