Rep. Betty McCollum, a U.S. Congresswoman representing Minnesota’s 4th district since 2001, posted several updates on her official social media account regarding ongoing political issues in Washington.

On October 15, 2025, McCollum wrote, "I’m in Washington with my fellow Democrats working to re-open government & ensure Americans can afford their health care. Since Republicans shut down government 15 days ago, House GOP has been AWOL, refusing to negotiate with Democrats to prevent skyrocketing costs for millions."

Later that day, she congratulated federal employees and union members on a recent legal victory: "Congratulations to @AFGENational members and all federal employees on a major victory in the fight against the illegal mass firings instituted by President Trump and Russ Vought! https://t.co/z6LYik4jvH" (October 15, 2025).

On October 17, McCollum addressed concerns about congressional representation from Arizona: "Speaker Johnson continues to deny the people of Arizona their rightful representation in Congress. Why? To prevent a vote on releasing the Epstein Files. It's taxation without representation, and it needs to end. Speaker Johnson should swear in Congresswoman-elect Grijalva today."

McCollum’s comments come amid an ongoing government shutdown attributed by Democrats to Republican leadership. She referenced efforts by House Democrats to reopen the government and address healthcare affordability during this period.

Her remarks also highlight continued disputes over congressional procedure and transparency regarding sensitive documents such as the "Epstein Files." The mention of Speaker Johnson relates to delays in swearing in new representatives following special elections.

McCollum has represented Minnesota’s 4th District since replacing Bruce Vento in 2001 after serving eight years in the Minnesota House of Representatives. Born in Minneapolis in 1954 and currently residing in Saint Paul, she is an alumna of St. Catherine University.
