Minnesota House Republicans, led by Education Chairs Rep. Ron Kresha and Rep. Peggy Bennett, have called on the Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) and the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) to comply with federal Title IX requirements. This action follows a finding from the U.S. Departments of Education and Health and Human Services that identified violations related to sex discrimination under Title IX.

Over 40 school districts in Minnesota have already urged state agencies to address these violations, warning that continued noncompliance could result in federal consequences.

“This situation is very troubling,” said Rep. Kresha. “When the federal government identifies a violation of Title IX, the state must respond quickly and clearly. School boards across Minnesota are right to expect accountability from the Department of Education and the High School League.”

“Our local school boards have stepped up to demand compliance with federal law, and we fully support them,” said Rep. Bennett. “It’s time for MDE and the High School League to lead by example and put their focus back on what truly matters: helping students succeed in reading, math, science, and technical education.”

Lawmakers who signed onto the letter emphasized their support for local education leaders’ call for immediate compliance with federal law.

A copy of this letter was sent to MDE Commissioner Willie Jett and MSHSL Board President Brent Schimek.
