U.S. Representative Betty McCollum, who serves Minnesota’s 4th district in Congress, addressed recent incidents of violence and national remembrance in a series of posts on her official social media account.

On September 10, 2025, McCollum responded to an incident involving Charlie Kirk in Utah by stating, "I am disgusted and horrified by the shooting of Charlie Kirk that took place this afternoon in Utah. We must unite as a nation to condemn this and all political violence. Americans must come together to stop the epidemic of gun violence in the United States."

Later that evening, she commented on another act of violence at a school in Colorado: "It is devastating to learn of the shooting today at Evergreen High School in Colorado. My heart goes out to those who have been wounded. Students shouldn’t have to live in fear of a shooting taking place in their school.  Congress must act to pass common-sense gun safety laws" (September 10, 2025).

The following day, McCollum marked the anniversary of the September 11 attacks with a message reflecting on national unity: "On the 24th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, we remember not only the lives lost and the heroism of America's first responders, but the unity and resolve that Americans showed the world in the face of a devastating tragedy. We will never forget." (September 11, 2025).

McCollum has represented Minnesota’s 4th District since replacing Bruce Vento in Congress in 2001. Before her tenure at the federal level, she served eight years in the Minnesota House of Representatives. Born in Minneapolis and currently residing in Saint Paul, McCollum earned her BA from St. Catherine University.
