Minnesota State Representative Nathan Nelson has provided an update on the 2025 legislative session, reflecting on accomplishments and challenges faced by lawmakers this year. Nelson, who represents District 11B, emphasized his ongoing commitment to advocating for rural communities and ensuring their voices are heard at the Capitol.
Nelson serves as Co-Vice Chair of the Children and Families Committee. He stated that his efforts have focused on supporting access to child care, respecting parental roles, and empowering local communities rather than centralizing decisions in St. Paul. According to Nelson, "That means supporting access to child care, respecting parents, and making sure our local communities—not bureaucrats in St. Paul—have the tools they need to help families thrive. Because when families are strong, our future is strong."
In addition to his work with families, Nelson highlighted his advocacy for family farmers and producers as a member of the Agriculture Committee. He noted that he has worked to expand mental health resources for farmers and ensure agricultural funding reaches those who need it most in rural areas rather than being concentrated in metropolitan regions. "I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: if you want to support rural Minnesota, start by listening to rural Minnesotans," Nelson said.
Nelson also addressed his role on the Environment Committee where he supports conservation efforts that balance environmental stewardship with respect for local input. He stated that while protecting natural resources is important, such measures should not come at the expense of diminishing rural perspectives.
Regarding legislative process issues this year, Nelson criticized House DFL members for what he described as delaying tactics during the session's early weeks: "Now, about that special session. Let’s be honest—this didn’t need to happen. When House DFL members chose to sit out the first 23 days of session, it stalled progress and set us back." He expressed frustration over these delays but reaffirmed his focus on passing a responsible budget during the special session.
"In this special session, I’ll keep fighting for a responsible, balanced budget—one that respects taxpayers, strengthens our local economy, and keeps government in check," said Nelson.
He concluded by thanking constituents for their trust and support: "It’s an honor to represent you, and I’ll continue to fight every day for our families, our farms, and our future."
