Rep. Betty McCollum, currently serving in the U.S. Congress representing Minnesota's 4th district, shared her views on recent legislative developments via social media. Her posts address the implications of a tax policy passed by the House in May, which she refers to as the "GOP Tax Scam."
On June 2, 2025, Rep. McCollum expressed concerns about the tax legislation's impact on essential services for working people. She stated that "The GOP Tax Scam passed by the House in May would take away food and health care from working people in order to hand out massive tax breaks to millionaires and billionaires." She further mentioned hosting a panel of experts at a town hall to discuss potential harm to communities.
In another post made at the same time, McCollum questioned the rationale behind these cuts: " Why is the GOP cutting these services that Minnesotans rely on? So millionaires and billionaires can get huge, permanent tax cuts." She highlighted that individuals earning a million dollars would receive significant tax reductions, exceeding annual earnings for most Minnesotans.
Additionally, McCollum pointed out specific local impacts of the legislation: " 19,000 Minnesotans living in the East Metro would lose food assistance — that could lead to the equivalent of every resident of Lake Elmo and Oak Park Heights going to sleep and waking up hungry every day."
Betty McCollum has served Minnesota’s 4th District since 2001 after replacing Bruce Vento. Before her tenure in Congress, she was part of the Minnesota House of Representatives from 1993 until her congressional election.
