Rep. Betty McCollum, a longstanding member of the U.S. Congress representing Minnesota's 4th District since 2001, recently expressed her concerns over several legislative and societal issues via social media.
On May 22, 2025, McCollum criticized former President Donald Trump's healthcare bill. She stated that "The ugly truth of Donald Trump’s ‘Big Beautiful Bill’ is that it strips away healthcare from 20,000 Minnesotans with disabilities, seniors, children, and working parents in Minnesota’s 4th Congressional District – that’s the equivalent of every resident of Stillwater losing their" access to essential services.
Later on the same day, McCollum addressed a tragic incident involving the deaths of Israeli Embassy staffers Yaron Lischinsky and Sarah Milgrim in Washington D.C. She conveyed her condolences by stating "I'm heartbroken by the killings of Israeli Embassy staffers Yaron Lischinsky and Sarah Milgrim last night in Washington, DC. My thoughts are with their families as they grieve this horrific act of antisemitic violence." Emphasizing the gravity of such incidents, she remarked that "Political violence of any kind has no place in our nation."
On May 23, 2025, McCollum highlighted potential financial implications embedded within a new tax legislation. She warned about substantial cuts to Medicare by saying "Hidden in the Billionaire Tax Giveaway bill that Republicans rushed to pass in the dead of night are changes that could result in half a trillion dollars in cuts to Medicare."
McCollum has been an active voice on these issues throughout her career. Serving since 2001 after replacing Bruce Vento and having previously served in the Minnesota House of Representatives from 1993 to 2001, she continues to advocate for her constituents from Saint Paul.
