Rep. Betty McCollum, a long-serving member of the U.S. Congress representing Minnesota’s 4th district, has recently taken to social media to express her views on several pressing issues. In a series of tweets, she addressed concerns ranging from educational funding cuts to international diplomatic engagements.
On February 15, 2025, Rep. McCollum criticized former President Donald Trump and entrepreneur Elon Musk for allegedly canceling scholarships for 185 University of St. Thomas students who were training to become special education teachers. She stated that this decision was made because they consider it part of "DEI" (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) initiatives. Instead, she claims they intend to redirect these funds towards providing additional tax cuts for billionaires. "Donald Trump and Elon Musk illegally canceled scholarships for 185 University of St. Thomas students training to be special education teachers because they deem it as “DEI”. They want to use this money instead to give away more tax cuts to billionaires."
Later that day, Rep. McCollum turned her attention towards fiscal policy proposed by House Republicans. She expressed concern over their budget proposal which she argues favors the wealthy at the expense of essential programs like SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program). According to her tweet on February 15, the proposed budget would result in a $4 trillion tax cut benefiting billionaire friends and donors while significantly reducing funding for SNAP—a program relied upon by over 400,000 Minnesotans—thereby disadvantaging seniors, children, and families."House Republicans have proposed a budget that would reward their billionaire friends and donors with a massive $4 trillion tax cut while gutting SNAP funding that over 400,000 Minnesotans rely on."
In another post dated February 16, Rep. McCollum shared details about her meeting with Estonia's Ambassador Kristjan Prikk in St. Paul. The discussion centered around strengthening transatlantic security alliances and supporting democracies globally amidst ongoing geopolitical tensions involving Russia's aggression against Ukraine."I met with Estonia’s Ambassador @kprikk in my St. Paul office to discuss our vital transatlantic security alliance and support for democracies around the world."
