Rep. Betty McCollum, currently serving in the U.S. Congress representing Minnesota’s 4th district, expressed strong opinions on recent political developments through a series of tweets. Her statements focused on the events surrounding January 6, 2021, and actions taken by former President Donald Trump.
On January 22, 2025, Rep. McCollum tweeted about the injuries sustained by law enforcement during the events at the U.S. Capitol. She stated: "More than 140 police officers were injured and several lost their lives as a result of the events of that day. Nobody in America takes seriously Republicans who claim to 'back the blue' while supporting a felon President who pardons right-wing extremists who attacked cops."
In another tweet on the same day, she addressed the legal outcomes for those involved in the Capitol attack and criticized pardoning them: "Those who attacked the U.S. Capitol at the direction of President Trump attempted to subvert our democracy by preventing the peaceful transfer of power, and they were each found guilty by a jury. Pardoning these criminals is a reckless act."
Further expressing her disapproval, Rep. McCollum condemned President Trump's decision to pardon individuals involved in these acts: "I strongly condemn President Trump’s outrageous pardon of over a thousand criminal insurrectionists, including violent right-wing extremists from the Proud Boys, Oath Keepers, and Three Percenters who violently assaulted police officers on January 6, 2021."
