Congresswoman Betty McCollum (MN-04) released the following statement regarding the Supreme Court’s 6-3 decision striking down President Biden’s student debt relief program:

“Today’s Supreme Court decision stopping President Biden’s student loan forgiveness plan is extremely disheartening. In Minnesota alone, 730,000 borrowers would have been eligible for relief. It is disappointing that as our economy continues to recover from the pandemic, many borrowers’ individual economic security has now been undermined by this Court.

“As young people enter the workforce, seek to purchase homes or raise their families, they should not be saddled with burdensome debt that holds them back from leading the lives they had planned for.

“President Biden took bold action in creating this plan meant to alleviate financial strain for millions of borrowers—because Democrats are committed to taking action to lower everyday costs and put people over politics.”
