Saint Paul Police Department issued the following announcement on Oct. 31.

A man is being treated for injuries that appear to be non-life-threatening after the handgun he was carrying discharged while police were conducting a pat-down search early Friday morning.

The incident occurred at about 1:15 a.m., when officers patrolling in the 1100 block of York Avenue reported seeing two people acting suspiciously. During the investigation, one of the men was detained.

Officers were in the process of conducting a pat-down search of the man when they discovered that he had a handgun. At some point, the gun discharged, striking the man in the leg.

St. Paul Fire medics were called while officers rendered aid. Medics transported the man to Regions Hospital, where he is in stable condition and under arrest for being a felon in possession of a firearm.

In accordance with Saint Paul Police Department policy, the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension will investigate the incident.

Three officers who were at the scene when the gun fired will be put on administrative leave, which is standard procedure.

Any updates about this incident will be released by the BCA.
