Saint Paul Parks and Recreation issued the following announcement on May 29.
Our hearts are heavy for our community today. The events of this week have been nothing short of devastating. The anger, pain, and confusion felt by our community is not lost on our Parks and Recreation staff, so many of whom live right here in Saint Paul and Minneapolis.
We want to reiterate our commitment to you that we will do everything possible to ensure our parks and recreation spaces remain safe and welcoming for all.
Last week, we told you we were in the planning stages for modified summer youth programs with additional safety measures in place, and we want you to know we remain committed to offering safe, programmed activities in our parks this summer. We hope to provide you with more details soon.
While our public buildings and some amenities are closed at this time, our staff continue to work hard each day to ensure safe access to outdoor spaces and provide resources and services to our Saint Paul residents. They have been serving meals to families in need, providing childcare for essential workers and homeless youth, encouraging safe use of our sports courts and fields, performing maintenance and cleanup in our parks, creating digital recreation opportunities to stay connected to our community, taking care of the plants and animals at Como Park Zoo & Conservatory and so much more.
In the days, weeks, and months to come, we ask that you please be kind, compassionate, and empathetic to our staff and other park visitors you may encounter. We also ask that you do not lose sight of the very real health risk of COVID-19 that still exists in our community. Please continue to wash your hands frequently, do not gather in groups, maintain a distance of 6 feet from anyone not in your household, and wear a mask whenever social distancing is not possible.
We are all in this together and we will get through this
