Health Partners issued the following announcement on Nov. 27.
We are so proud! Our very own Andrea Singh, MD, has received Minnesota’s 2019 HPV Vaccine Cancer Prevention Award! Dr. Singh was recognized for her outstanding work to promote the importance of human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination – especially at a young age - and its power to prevent cancer.
Every year 33,700 people in the US are diagnosed with a cancer caused by HPV infection, but more than 90 percent of these cancers could be prevented through HPV vaccination. The CDC recommends boys and girls get vaccinated at ages 11-12, when it is most effective. Unfortunately, not enough parents are choosing to do so.
Dr. Singh has led a number of initiatives to make sure adolescents receive the HPV vaccine at the recommended time, including her help creating a system to do outreach to children overdue for immunizations. Since the system launched this summer, more than 1,200 adolescents overdue for HPV vaccination have been reached out to.
“We have the power to prevent cancer, but the HPV vaccine is underutilized,” said Matt Flory, health systems manager at Minnesota Chapter of American Cancer Society. “We know that strong provider recommendations are effective in improving vaccination rates, so the efforts by people like Dr. Singh are so important in this fight against cancer.”
