Rep. Betty McCollum, a long-serving member of the U.S. Congress representing Minnesota’s 4th district since 2001, has been vocal on social media about her opposition to a legislative proposal she refers to as the “Big Ugly Bill.” The bill is backed by former President Donald Trump and Congressional Republicans.

On July 2, 2025, McCollum tweeted that the “Trump/Congressional Republican Big Ugly Bill will kick 173,268 Minnesotans off their health care so they can give giant tax breaks to millionaires and billionaires.” She expressed her firm stance against the bill by stating, “I will vote NO!”

Later that day, McCollum highlighted the potential impact of Minnesota’s congressional delegation in blocking the bill. She stated that “Minnesota’s evenly divided delegation could provide the four patriotic Republican votes needed to join Democrats to stop the Big Ugly Bill.”

On July 3, 2025, McCollum further criticized the bill as a financial benefit for wealthy individuals such as Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos. She described it as “a trillion-dollar handout for billionaires like Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos – paid for in part by ripping away healthcare and nutrition assistance from millions of Americans.” She confirmed her opposition by stating, “I joined every Democrat in Congress by voting NO!”

Betty McCollum was born in Minneapolis in 1954 and resides in Saint Paul. Before serving in Congress, she was a member of the Minnesota House of Representatives from 1993 until her congressional election. A graduate of St. Catherine University with a BA obtained in 1987, she succeeded Bruce Vento as representative for Minnesota’s 4th District.
