Minnesota State Representative Nathan Nelson provided an update on recent legislative activity as the House Republican majority continues its work at the Capitol. With five weeks into the session, Nelson described a week filled with committee hearings, constituent meetings, and new legislation.
Nelson highlighted his ongoing focus on agriculture, noting its personal significance to him as a farmer. He said he is committed to supporting Minnesota’s agricultural community: “As a farmer myself, I know firsthand the challenges our ag community faces, and I’ll always fight to ensure Minnesota’s farmers have the resources and support they need to thrive.”
The state’s latest budget forecast was also addressed in Nelson’s message. He expressed concern over what he called an “unsustainable financial path,” pointing out that the projected budget surplus has decreased and a nearly $6 billion deficit is expected for the 2028-29 biennium. “That’s $852 million worse than just a few months ago. It’s clear that the Democrats’ tax-and-spend approach is catching up with us, and if we don’t course correct, hardworking Minnesotans will be left paying the price,” Nelson stated.
He reiterated House Republicans’ position on fiscal responsibility: “We cannot keep growing government at the expense of taxpayers. Instead, we should be cutting wasteful spending, delivering permanent tax relief, and ensuring our economy remains strong for generations to come.” Nelson added that he will continue advocating for policies that prioritize taxpayers and avoid future financial problems.
Nelson announced his authorship of House File 857, which would allocate $4.5 million in both 2026 and 2027 to the Agricultural Utilization Research Institute (AURI). The funding aims to support AURI’s work in researching and developing ways to add value to Minnesota farm products. According to Nelson, “AURI has a proven track record of success, boasting an impressive 45-to-1 return on investment. That means every dollar we put in comes back in ways that help our farmers, create jobs, and strengthen rural economies.”
He emphasized AURI’s role in driving agricultural innovation by helping develop new uses for crops and assisting entrepreneurs.
Nelson also recognized Riley Gaines for her advocacy regarding fairness in girls’ sports: “Her passion and courage in speaking out on this issue is nothing short of inspiring.” He referred to Title IX as instrumental for female athletes and expressed support for protecting opportunities for girls in sports: “Girls deserve a level playing field—plain and simple.”
