State Representative Ben Bakeberg (R–Jordan) has been named a 2025 Legislator of Distinction by the Minnesota School Boards Association (MSBA). The recognition comes as part of MSBA’s annual Legislative Achievement Award, which highlights state legislators who address school board concerns and support public education policies.

Bakeberg was recognized for his leadership on education finance during the 2025 legislative session. He authored provisions including a 3% increase to the general education formula and an increase in Location Optional Revenue. Additionally, he advocated for greater fund balance flexibility, particularly changes related to the nutrition fund, and worked toward reducing unfunded mandates that impact local school budgets.

The MSBA noted Bakeberg’s efforts to collaborate with school board members and amplify their concerns at the Capitol. His work focused on student discipline reform and reinforcing local control for districts throughout Minnesota.

“I’m incredibly grateful to receive this recognition from MSBA,” said Rep. Bakeberg. “As middle school principal, I’ve spent years working in schools alongside teachers, staff, and families, I understand the real challenges our districts face. This award reflects the work we’ve done together to move past politics and focus on practical solutions that support our students, strengthen local control, and get results where they’re needed most – in the classroom.”

Denise Dittrich, Director of Government Relations for MSBA, commented: “Representative Bakeberg’s thoughtful engagement with school board members and commitment to addressing real challenges in our public schools demonstrate the critical role legislators play in supporting strong local governance and student success across Minnesota.”
