House Republicans in Minnesota have introduced a new school safety agenda aimed at increasing protections for students, improving access to mental health care, and ensuring accountability for violent offenders. The announcement follows a recent incident at Annunciation Catholic School that has had a significant impact on the state.

Rep. Spencer Igo commented on the purpose of the proposed legislation: “Our kids are entitled to have safe schools where they can focus on learning, and families deserve peace of mind. This agenda delivers real solutions by strengthening school security, expanding mental health care, and making sure violent criminals are held accountable. Our communities can come together with these policies to heal our State.”

The plan includes several measures such as expanding safety funding to non-public schools, creating school security grants through initiatives like the SHIELD Act (HF 15), providing schools with more flexibility in how they use safety funds, making School Resource Officers available in every school, revising rules that limit doctors’ ability to use their medical judgment, and increasing support for mental health treatment beds.
